Historical Memory Centre
Public exhibition centre
The aim of the project is to create a museum, research and educational complex as an integral part of the Memorial, with an expressive architectural image that works both at the level of visitors' direct perception and at the scale of the surrounding landscape.
In searching for an architectural image, the project draws on the monuments of the "Green Belt of Glory", an important part of the region's history. One of the key tasks was to create a strong, memorable silhouette visible from Kievskoye Highway that emphasises the memorial character of the site.
The project aims to create a space for remembrance, reflection and dialogue. To this end, various scenarios of interaction between the complex and its visitors have been developed, both at the level of the site plan and at the scale of the interiors. On the one hand, the architectural and artistic concept works in contrast with the existing memorial; on the other, it develops the theme of "shards" inherent in it. This approach creates a contemporary architectural image whose forms contain direct and indirect references to the war period.

The Memorial complex site has a clear layout formed along a central axis, the dominant feature of the monument and visitor routes. The landscape features of the site and the visual connection with the monument, established on entering the grounds, play a significant role in how the complex is perceived. The new building is integrated into the memorial environment according to the principles of subordinating architecture to the idea of remembrance, creating visual links with the existing memorial structures and forming spaces that help visitors engage with the main theme of the complex.
General elevation
- Main architectural and artistic idea
The form of the complex has a complex, multifaceted structure born from the image of shards, like the pedestal of the monument. The composition is based on two scalene triangles that form the museum building and the research and education building. These volumes rise upwards like arms raised to the sky, continuing the axis of the main approach to the complex. All the surrounding elements, including landscaping, small architectural forms and auxiliary buildings, are also formed from "shards" of various sizes, emphasising the fragility of human life in the face of an all-destroying war. The architecture of the complex reads as a frozen testimony to destruction: shards rising from the ground under the silent gaze of the "Mother Embracing Her Children" monument.
- Visitor experience
The architecture sets out a sequential route for visitors, from the memorial space to the museum and educational spaces, with clearly placed emotional and semantic accents.
The spatial composition of the complex is based on the interaction of two buildings linked by an underground level. Despite its visual complexity, the form-making follows the principles of conciseness, monumentality and restraint: the entire project is built from straight rays forming triangular shapes. Particular attention is paid to the interplay of solid and permeable surfaces. Light becomes the most important tool for revealing the interior space and shaping the emotional experience.
